Sutton Barbershop Festival 2013 - singer

If you’ve always wanted to get up and sing but been too nervous about it, or your school-mates tell you it’s naff or boring, this is a safe place for you to come and give it a try and find out for yourself. Likewise, if you already sing in a choir or with mates at karaoke nights but want to push yourself just a little bit further, this is somewhere you want to be.

  • Venue: Secombe Theatre, Sutton
  • Date/Time: Sat Sept 14th – 2pm start, finishing around 5pm
  • Content: The basics of good singing and believable performance
  • Registration: Is required, deadline is now Sept 10th
  • Cost: Free to you (we went and got some sponsorship!)
  • Reward: Music-making fun – guaranteed

Everyone, male or female, is welcome to come and get involved. The only restriction is that you have to be aged 12 or over and if you’re under 16 you have to bring an adult with you. But they are the only rules. Whether you are over 65 with a penchant for purple, or under-21 and think you’re the best thing since Adele, you’re welcome.

We can offer the workshop for free because we’ve received sponsorship from barbershop organisations the British Association of Barbershop Singers, the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers and Barbershop in Harmony.

But the coaching we have lined up for you is top-notch.

Sutton Barbershop Festival 2013 - vocal coach Timm Barkworth

Timm Barkworth is our guru for the day. Timm discovered a cappella harmony when he was a teenager and has reached the top of the tree as a quartet singer in British barbershop, winning gold medals with Pitch Invasion in 2006 and Evolution in 2009. He has taken the coaching programme at USA’s International Harmony College  and for 2 years he worked with the National Barbershop Youth Chorus. During that time he introduced lots of young singers to harmony singing – four of them being The Great British Barbershop Boys – or Monkey Magic as he originally named them. He is Musical Director of Signature Singers.

At the workshop you will pick up some barbershop ‘tags’, sing some fun rounds and ‘standards’, stand in amongst the ranks of a top quality chorus and really feel what close harmony sounds like from the inside out. You can get a flavour of it through a computer speaker but if you’ve not heard (or made) 4-part harmony in the flesh before, you are truly in for a treat.

Registration is easy – just fill in the form below, or text/phone 07914 702938
